Overview: TruOrleans

We recently had the pleasure of dining at TruOrleans, a staple in the burgeoning H Street restaurant scene. TruOrleans boasts a great open-air upstairs reminiscent of French Quarter establishments, but the focus is on the Cajun and southern-tradition food, which did not disappoint.

We started with some “Category 4” Hurricanes, which loosened our tongues and raised our spirits prior to the first appetizer’s arrival.

The alligator bites were crispy fried and made me thankful there are people out there who enjoy hunting gators.

We also downed some delicious crab rolls and some excellent baked oysters that left us stuffed even before the entrees arrived.
As for entrees, the barbecue shrimp fettuccine was thick, creamy and tasty.  The leftovers made an awesome snack the next day!

The Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage would be right at home anywhere on Bourbon Street or in the French Quarter, as would the Shrimp and Grits.

Delicious sides of fried green tomatoes, corn bread, and hush puppies rounded out a perfectly New Orlean-esque affair.

But wait, there was even more.  Dessert arrived and the bananas foster cheese cake was rich and creamy.
But the real highlight of the entire evening were incredible, un-missable fried dough phenoms:  the Beignet Straws.  Seriously, the Straws were amazing!

If you are looking to have a delectably sinful Mardi Gras, TruOrleans can fulfill all of your your gluttonous desires.
