q Plating/Presentation

Stefanie Gans is the co-editor of Endless Simmer, a blog covering all things food: from recipes to restaurant reviews to pop culture. While not cooking or eating, Stefanie Gans works for a national foundation advocating for working women. Stefanie's writing has appeared in Express, the Onion’s AV Club, and BusinessWoman Magazine.

How would you describe DC Cuisine?
When my sister was visiting me a few weeks ago, I let her in on a little secret – Thai iced coffee. But I didn’t even know it was a secret. That’s the thing. I’ve been living here so long that I forget that lots of other places (she goes to college in the mountains of Pennsylvania) do not have the breadth and quality of choices. Ethiopian, El Salvedorian; French bistro, British pub. I think you get the idea.

How did you get into food blogging?

When I first started working, I was lucky to have awesome coworkers (one of whom is now my boyfriend) that were adventurous cooks (my boyfriend not one of them.) We were all pretty new at finding our way around the kitchen and we’d gather everyday and talk about our cooking -- successful or not -- and try each other’s leftovers. When we started new jobs, we created the blog as a way to stay connected, culinarily speaking, and to find a bigger audience to share our creations and thoughts on the food scene.

What is your favorite Food Network show?

I’m so over Food Network. I’ve moved on to cooking shows on PBS and Discovery Health. Although, I can’t lie. Alton Brown and Ina Garten are pretty badass in HD. My favorite TV chef, however, is Jacques Pepin and I’m very excited for his new show More Fast Food My Way. He is so funny, so talented and so entertaining to watch. And I love that French accent.

If we weren't making chicken potpie, what is your favorite comfort food recipe?

I usually need comfort the most when I’m hung over. So take me to a diner – fried egg and swiss cheese on a bagel, please! And depending on the severity of the hangover, I’ll take a coffee (mild-moderate) or a coke (heavy.)

You've met the Challengers...
1. Lauren DeSantis: Host and Producer of Capital Cooking
2. April Fulton: Food Scribe
3. Stefanie Gans: Endless Simmer
4. Alison McConnell: Humble Gourmand
5. Johnna Rowe: Johnna Knows Good Food

Now make sure to keep reading the blog to find out the airing dates in your area and how you can vote. I can't wait to eat some chicken potpie...I better get started on my recipe soon.

You've met Johnna Rowe, Alison and April. Hopefully you’ve met me in St. Louis and on many of my other episodes, but if not, now is your chance.

Lauren DeSantis is the CEO of DeSantis Productions, LLC that produces the public television series, Capital Cooking with Lauren DeSantis. She is a lawyer by day and host/producer of her television show on the weekends. Lauren grew up in an Italian family in St. Louis, Missouri, where eating well was the key to every family gathering. She studied political science at Truman State University and afterwards received a J.D. from Duke University School of Law. Throughout her education, Lauren honed her cooking and entertaining skills by hosting numerous dinner parties with her girlfriends. After graduating from Duke Law, Lauren married her husband, Corey Then, and moved to Washington, D.C., to begin a career as an attorney. Although her life has become increasingly hectic, she always makes time for cooking because it provides her an outlet for creativity and fun. By incorporating dishes from the hundreds of national and international cultures represented in Washington, D.C., Lauren's cooking style is continually evolving. Her television show, Capital Cooking, began airing May 2, 2008 and explores recipes from the top DC chefs as well as cooking with DC insiders from various industries. Capital Cooking hopes to share Lauren's passion by providing you with recipes and tips to prepare great meals with great friends. In addition to filming her show, she also teaches cooking classes at Arlington Adult Education.

DC Cuisine...
Some say seafood, others recognize the half-smoke, but I think DC is a melting pot of culture and cuisine… from ethnic food to regional favorites. Capital Cooking tries to capture the essence of the culinary world of our nation’s capital.

Blogging…

I started the Capital Cooking Show blog in conjunction with my television show. The blog is a way to add to topics covered on the show and more. I feature recipes, food events, wine pairings, etc.

Food Network Show...

My favorite Food Network Show is Tyler’s Ultimate. He is an excellent chef and the food always tastes amazing. I also love the camera angles and colors of the set.

Comfort Food...
One of my most favorite comfort foods is Lasagna (I am Italian). I love cheese!!!! I still think my mom makes the best, but mine isn’t far behind and every time I make it, I’m reminded of home.

Make sure you don't miss this awesome episode!

Washington Post Launches new Going Out Guide

washingtonpost.com today relaunched the popular City Guide as the “Going Out Guide,” a robust interactive resource for local entertainment planning in the Washington, D.C. area. Renamed to showcase a deepened focus on restaurants, movies, special events and bars and clubs, the Going Out Guide brings readers the latest information and expert reviews on area hotspots. It also provides readers customized search results that help them easily plan a night out.

“The Going Out Guide is made up of local experts, like Tom Sietsema and the Going Out Gurus, who are constantly out trying area restaurants and local venues to provide readers the most accurate reviews and ideas on ways to spend their free time,” said Nancy Kerr, assistant managing editor for features for washingtonpost.com. “We combine expert opinions with user feedback to create a must-visit site for anyone who wants to make a quick decision about a restaurant or just wants to learn more about the D.C. entertainment scene.”

Building off its rich database of restaurants, events and bars, the Going Out Guide experts compiled over 25 “Best Bets” – lists that showcase 5-10 picks in categories like Best Pizza and Best Wine Bars. The Going Out Gurus’ blog also has a new look and feel, and the Gurus will still hold their weekly “Got Plans?” chat with readers Thursdays at 1 p.m. ET.

In addition to seeing Post experts’ reviews and top picks, users can build and share their own “Go Out” lists. Go Out lists function as personal play lists, and can be anything from the top ten places a user wants to try to a list of favorite hot spots. Local celebrities, like Washington Nationals baseball star Ryan Zimmerman and restaurateur Michel Richard, have created “Go Out” lists of places they love.

Reviews and recommendations from the Going Out Guide are available to iPhone users through the free Going Out Guide application on Apple’s App Store. The application includes information on over 2,000 Washington, D.C.-area restaurants, bars and clubs. Also, anyone with a Web-enabled mobile phone can look up information on D.C. area restaurants, bars and clubs or movie show times by visiting: http://twp.com/gog. Users without that capability can text a search term plus a location to WPOST (97678).

Restaurant Review: Cork

I can knock one off of the list of restaurants I want to try. We had the opportunity to eat at Cork last week and the food was excellent. We did have quite a long wait, but it was fun to chat with friends and try different reds from their wine list. The menu is tapas style, so you may need to order a few. Chef Ron Tanaka, former sous chef with CityZen and Citronelle, runs the kitchen. Maybe Tanaka would like to be a guest on Capital Cooking and demonstrate the Pernod braised lamb. The Avocado, pistachios, toasted pistachio oil, sea salt, grilled bread was my favorite. We also loved the scallops. The atmosphere is lively.

The great thing is that it is located in my new neighborhood. We moved on Wednesday and we were greeted by the local thief stealing both of our brief cases with plenty of personal information and valuables:( Hopefully it will get better from here once we get our stuff unpacked and settled. The new kitchen is fantastic! We will film our first episode on the new set on Sunday, November 2. Can't wait!! Also looking forward to trying the wide selection of restaurants around the area.

Who is up for a dinner social?

Join me in participating in Chef Eric Ripert's Dinner Social. Ripert is the chef extraordinaire of New York’s Le Bernardin and the new West End Bistro here in D.C.

For each dinner Ripert will create a dinner menu using the season's freshest ingredients. It will include two canapés and three courses (first, main and dessert) and will also suggest wine pairings for each stage of the meal. Ripert will write for you a step-by-step plan that will allow you to enjoy the party rather than working at the stove for the whole time. It is not going to be too complicated. It will be an easy way to combine wonderful, fresh ingredients and simple techniques to create an elegant meal for you, your friends and your family. Attention friends: who is interested in coming over when I make one of these delicious meals? Sounds like fun, right?!

We will document party. After the dinner party is over, I will return to the site and share the highlights. I hope that you will post pictures and write about your experiences here on the site through our new gallery feature. Who's ready? This will give me a chance to try out my new kitchen.

We'll Have A Series Of Monthly Dinner Parties

1. Lauren DeSantis: Host and Producer of Capital Cooking
2. April Fulton: Food Scribe
3. Stefanie Gans: Endless Simmer

q Ability to stay within the time limit

  • Plating/Presentation

You've met Johnna Rowe and Alison McConnell... Now it is time to meet April.

April Fulton is a recovering Capitol Hill reporter turned freelance food writer who decided to turn her longtime passion for cooking, eating and writing into a new career three years ago. Her food articles have appeared in the Washington Post, on National Public Radio, and in Capitol File Magazine, among others. In between cooking for family and friends, spending time with her son, and writing for paying gigs, she writes a regular blog about her culinary adventures as The Food Scribe, www.thefoodscribe.com.

How would you describe DC Cuisine? DC cuisine is a strange mix of southern and power food, with a little international flair thrown in, thanks to imports like Jose Andres. I hope the recent influx of celebrity chef outposts like the Source (Wolfgang Puck) and West End Bistro (Eric Ripert) will help spread the notion that this city is a dining destination.

How did you get into food blogging? I started blogging when I realized I had something to say and no other way to say it. At the time I was a full time Capitol Hill reporter with no experience in food other than the fact that I enjoyed cooking and eating. Three years ago I decided to start putting the passion into practice and quit my job to pursue freelancing full time. I have a lot more time and opportunity to post on my blog now, which is good exposure as well.

What is your favorite Food Network show? I really like Barefoot Contessa because Ina Garten is so down-to-earth about food and clearly enjoys eating it. I believe in the old adage that you should never trust a skinny chef, that's why people like Giada annoy me. I like her food, but seriously, is she purging between takes?

If we weren't making chicken potpie, what is your favorite comfort food recipe? Lasagna. There's something about tomatoes, cheese and pasta that makes everything OK. Plus its portable and there are endless varieties. I never make it the same way twice and I frequently make it to bring to friends and family in need of a little comfort.

Remember leading up to the competition, you will get a chance to meet all of the challengers to see who you want to be the Food Blogger Challenge Winner! The race is close and the stakes are high. If you'd like to attend the taping, email me at capitalcooking@gmail.com. Limited space available.

Food Bloggers Challenge: Meet Alison

Don't forget that Capital Cooking will be filming the Food Bloggers Challenge: Comfort Food soon. Join Lauren and four other food bloggers as they compete in making the best Chicken Potpie. A panel of judges will determine the winner along with votes from readers and viewers.

Challengers
1. Lauren DeSantis: Host and Producer of Capital Cooking
2. April Fulton: Food Scribe

3. Mystery Judge
4. Readers and Viewers

You've met Johnna Rowe. Now it is time to meet Alison McConnell...
Alisons a D.C.-based freelance food journalist who went to school in Maine and London before settling in our nation's capital. She is a student of L'Academie de Cuisine and edits The Humble Gourmand, a monthly online publication featuring recipes, restaurant reviews, wine and beer columns, and a blog, Victuals and Vittles.

Alison says...
DC Cuisine a mixed bag, which I love. The Washington restaurant scene is burgeoning in a very exciting way. After living here 4 years, I have favorites in most neighborhoods, but there seem to be new spots cropping up every day.

How Alison started blogging...
I started The Humble Gourmand as an online home for my own writing, and along the way some very motivated friends and strangers came out of the woodwork to offer their talents. We publish the first Friday of every month and update the blog (Victuals and Vittles) in between, with food news, links to good articles, and random musings.

Her favorite Food Network Show...
I adore Ina Garten's food. I don't get to watch her show often -- and clearly I lack the house in the Hamptons -- but her recipes are straightforward, easy to follow, and turn out beautifully every time.

Her other favorite Comfort Food...
Macaroni and cheese, with plenty of extra-sharp cheddar. Dense crust of crumbled Ritz crackers and butter on top. Takes me right back to being a kid -- it's my mom's recipe, after all -- and the only thing I do differently now is spike it with hot sauce.

As we are leading up to the competition, you will get a chance to meet all of the challengers to see who you want to be the Food Blogger Challenge Winner! The race is close and the stakes are high. If you'd like to attend, email me at capitalcooking@gmail.com.

Foodbuzz Publisher Community Launches.

LAUNCH OF GLOBAL FOODBUZZ BLOGGER COMMUNITY

LEVERAGES REAL-PEOPLE, REAL-TIME POWER OF FOOD PUBLISHING

San Francisco – October 13, 2008: Foodbuzz, Inc., officially inaugurates its food blogger community with more than 1,000 blog partners, a global food blogging event and an online platform that captures the real-people, real-time power of food publishing in every corner of the world. At launch, the Foodbuzz community ranks as one of the top-10 Internet destinations for food and dining (Quantcast), with bloggers based in 45 countries and 863 cities serving up daily food content.

“Food bloggers are at the forefront of reality publishing and the dramatic growth of new media has redefined how food enthusiasts access tasty content,” said Doug Collister, Executive Vice President of Foodbuzz, Inc. “Food bloggers are the new breed of local food experts and at any minute of the day, Foodbuzz is there to help capture the immediacy of their hands-on experiences, be it a memorable restaurant meal, a trip to the farmers market, or a special home-cooked meal.”

Foodbuzz is the only online community with content created exclusively by food bloggers and rated by foodies. The site offers more than 20,000 pieces of new food and dining content weekly, including recipes, photos, blog posts, videos and restaurant reviews. Members decide the “tastiness” of each piece of content by voting and “buzz” the most popular posts to the top of the daily menu of submissions. Foodbuzz currently logs over 13 million monthly page views and over three million monthly unique visitors.

“Our goal is to be the number-one online source of quality food and dining content by promoting the talent, enthusiasm and knowledge of food bloggers around the globe,” said Ben Dehan, founder and CEO of Foodbuzz, Inc.

The Foodbuzz blogger community is growing at a rate of 40 percent per month driven by strong growth in existing partner blogs and the addition of over 100 new blogs per month. “The Foodbuzz.com Web site is like the stock of a great soup. The Web site provides the base or backbone for bloggers to interact as a community, contribute content, and have that content buzzed by their peers,” said Mr. Dehan.

Global Blogging Event

Demonstrating the talent and scope of the Foodbuzz community, 24 Meals, 24 Hours, 24 Blogs offered online food enthusiasts an international, virtual street festival of food and diversity. The new feature showcased blog posts from 24 Foodbuzz partner bloggers chronicling events occurring around the globe during a 24 hour period and included:

24 Meals, 24 Hours, 24 Blogs” captures the quality and unique local perspective of our food bloggers and shared it with the world,” said Ryan Stern, Director of the Foodbuzz Publisher Community. “It illustrates exactly what the future of food publishing is all about – real food, experienced by real people, shared real-time.”

About Foodbuzz, Inc.

Based in San Francisco, Foodbuzz, Inc., launched its beta Web site, foodbuzz.com, in 2007. In less than a year, Fooduzz.com and its community of over 1,000 exclusive partner food blogs have grown into an extended online property that reaches more than three million users.

Food Bloggers Challenge: Meet Johnna

Get Ready for the Food Bloggers Challenge: Comfort Food.

3. Stefanie Gans: Endless Simmer
4. Alison McConnell: Humble Gourmand
5. Johnna Rowe: Johnna Knows Good Food

Meet Johnna Rowe...
Johnna Rowe is an attorney in Washington, D.C. Johnna turned her love of food into a food based website, "Johnna Knows Good Food" www.johnnaknowsgoodfood.com. The site is dedicated to all things related to food: recipes, drink mixes, restaurant reviews, food/drink events, etc. In 2008, Johnna expanded her interest in food to the catering business and has now begun accepting offers to cater local events. When not writing or cooking, Johnna loves to read celebrity gossip blogs, research real estate and travel.

Johnna says...
DC cuisine represents the wide range of cultures that frequent the city yearly. Each year new restaurants are added and are evidence of the constant changes that are happening here.

How Johnna started blogging...
I started food blogging after realizing how much I really liked telling people about different restaurant experiences I had around the city and elsewhere. Additionally, many people wanted to know the recipes of different things I make, so I figured this would be an easy go-to spot for all my recipes.

Her favorite Food Network Show...
My favorite Food Network Show is Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee. I like Sandra Lee because she does both food and drinks in every episode. Her dishes are easy to make on a budget and quick for the person who doesn't have alot of time but wants lots of flavor.

Her other favorite Comfort Food...
If we weren't making chicken pot pie...hands down, I would've made some pretty delicious mac n' cheese;-)

As we are leading up to the competition, you will get a chance to meet all of the challengers to see who you want to be the Food Blogger Challenge Winner! The race is close and the stakes are high. If you'd like to attend, email me at capitalcooking@gmail.com.
